writing elsewhere

I started a personal LJ in 2001 and kept it going for over 2 years. I was sad when i had to lay it to rest. In some ways, it was a relief, an opportunity for self-exploration. In other ways, it exposed me, made me vulnerable in ways that i wasn't prepared to handle in this format. I took it down.

Eventually, my research blog started getting infused with personal notes. It's now kind of a blend of my LJ and my research blog, but not really the same.

To answer your question: I got a detention for being on myspace because for MASD (Montrose Area School District) it's not considered an educational and acceptable way of using the available technology. So now, I have had my computer privalages suspended for 30 days (putting a damper on my damned journalism work) and I've recieved the affore mentioned detention. Though, I'd like to make the point that LivJournal and most sites like that are mainly forbidden at school as well. Even after school.

Do they give you a list of things that you can't go to? Why don't they just block the sites? What constitutes "educational"?

They didn't give a list of what you can or cannot do. You just learn by getting yelled at. And as far as what constitutes "educational", there are no actual guidelines. In all honesty it seems that they make it up as they go along. I have no idea why they don't just block the unacceptable sites. The majority of the students at my school use the computers to go on Myspace and sites like that on a regular basis. When I got in trouble, there were other people on Myspace at the same time I was. In the same room. So the whole thing is terribly confusing.
